About Me
Often when I have met new people and they discover I am a makeup artist they have asked me "is this the right colour lipstick for me", or "could you show me how to apply my makeup as I've always wanted to know how to apply it properly" and so on.
Having always been interested in makeup, and all aspects of beauty therapy, I suppose I just took it for granted that everyone knew how to apply makeup.
As a child I was always fascinated by the art, as my mother will confirm, having removed lipstick from the dog, the cat, my various dolls and the walls!
It was when I grew out of that phase that I started to appreciate not only the physical effect makeup has on people but also the emotional aspects of the boost in confidence it can achieve.
In 1986 I began my studies at a local college in Northampton and then completed my training at Steiner's Beauty School, London.
I worked my way up the ladder, starting with scrubbing out saunas and eventually owning my own salon in 1995.
However, a position as Beauty Manager for the prestigious Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon in Mayfair, at their flagship store in London proved too tempting and I decided to put my own business ideas on hold for a while to gain more experience at such a prestigious level.
This proved an excellent move, particularly when I was promoted to General Manager.
After 15 years in the beauty industry I decided to make a break and try something completely different.
I became a recruitment consultant placing receptionists in some of the major law firms and banks in the City.
It was challenging and great fun but I continued to maintain my beauty skills, tinting eyelashes and painting nails at the office desks - after office hours of course!
I got married in 2003 and my husband (who is Scottish) and I decided to move to Edinburgh to embark on a new life.
This was a great opportunity for me career-wise as I was free to do anything - start my own business, go back into beauty or re-train to do something entirely new.
As I spent some time exploring my new home city, I came across various department stores to check out.
I naturally investigated the makeup counters, and was talked into allowing a couple of sales assistants to give me a 'make over'.
It was an interesting experience as they attempted to sell me £100 worth of what I felt to be un-necessary makeup.
I found myself walking away feeling uncomfortably 'made up' with a 'new look' which was definitely not for me.
I then observed some of the makeup applications being offered to others, accompanied by what seemed to me to be a rather over enthusiastic sales approach and the seeds of an idea began to materialise.
With my skills and years of beauty experience behind me I realised that perhaps here was an opportunity.
I decided that many women may prefer to receive advice on makeup techniques and application, without the pressure to buy anything and in the privacy and comfort of their home.
Being flexible with time removes the hurry to purchase in the rush of a lunch break, or the busy Saturday afternoon shopping rounds, when the danger is that you end up with the wrong shade of foundation.
I can fit in around people, after work or after dropping children off to school.
So this is how the whole idea developed.
